It's one of the most frustrating things about the UK MOT: your car can be mechanically perfect, but a torn or smeary windscreen wiper blade will fail you. The DVSA classifies wipers under "view of the road" — and any wiper that doesn't clear the screen properly is grounds for a major failure.

The good news: it's also one of the cheapest issues in motoring to put right. Most drivers can fix it in under 10 minutes with a £15-£25 set of replacement blades.

What Counts as a Wiper Fail

The MOT tester is looking for three things:

If any of these are flagged "Dangerous" the car fails immediately. "Major" defects are also failures. "Minor" notes don't fail the MOT but are warnings to address before they get worse.

How to Check Your Wipers (60-Second Test)

Before your MOT, do this simple check at home:

  1. Spray water on a dry, clean windscreen using your washers
  2. Run the wipers at normal speed for 5-6 cycles
  3. Look for: streaks, smears, juddering, missed patches, squealing noises

If you see any of those, you need new blades. Don't bother with rubber-only refills — the spring tension and arm geometry on older wipers is usually the bigger problem.

What to Buy

You don't need to spend a fortune. Good quality replacement wiper blades cost £8-£15 each from major brands like Bosch, Valeo, or Halfords' own range. Avoid the cheapest no-name blades — they don't last and the rubber compound is poor.

For most UK cars, you'll find a huge range of blades at competitive prices on eBay Motors UK. Filter by your exact make and model to get a guaranteed fit. The "Bosch Aerotwin" and "Valeo Silencio" ranges are particularly well-regarded.

You'll also want to make sure your washer fluid is topped up before the MOT. A 5-litre bottle of concentrated screenwash typically costs £5-£8 and lasts most of a year.

How to Fit New Wiper Blades

Modern wiper blades use one of three common fittings: hook (J-hook), pin, or push-button. Your car's manual will tell you which type, or you can simply look at the existing blade.

The basic process:

  1. Lift the wiper arm fully away from the windscreen
  2. Press the release tab on the connector
  3. Slide the old blade off the arm
  4. Slot the new blade on until it clicks
  5. Lower carefully back to the windscreen

If you've never done it before, YouTube has hundreds of make-specific videos — search for "[your car model] wiper blade replacement."

Don't Forget the Rear Wiper

If your car has a rear wiper (most hatchbacks, estates and SUVs do), it's tested too. Rear blades are smaller and often a different fitment to the front. Replace them together — they fail at similar rates.

The Bigger Lesson

The MOT pass rate is hugely improved by basic pre-test prep. A few minutes checking lights, wipers, tyres and screen wash can save you the cost of an MOT retest (currently £54.85). Always do a quick walk-around before the test.

And if you're shopping for your next car, remember: a recent MOT pass with no advisories is a strong sign the previous owner cared. Use Car Cupid to find well-maintained used cars across AutoTrader, eBay, Cazoo, Cinch and Heycar in a single search.
