Electric cars hold one unpleasant surprise for used buyers, and it has nothing to do with the battery. A large number of second-hand EVs and plug-in hybrids are sold without the charging cables they were originally supplied with — and unlike a missing parcel shelf or a single key, this one stops you using the car properly on day one.
It happens for ordinary reasons. Cables get left in a garage during a house move. They get handed back with a lease car. They get stolen off a driveway overnight. Or the first owner simply kept them, because they bought another EV. Whatever the cause, the cable is not part of the V5C, so nothing in the paperwork tells you it is missing.
This guide covers what the different cables actually do, which one your car needs, and what to check before money changes hands.
The three-part rule
Charging speed is decided by three things, and you are always limited by the slowest of them:
- The power source — a domestic three-pin socket, a home wallbox, or a public charge point
- The cable — rated for a particular current, single or three phase
- The car's onboard charger — a fixed limit built into the vehicle
This is the single most useful thing to understand, because it explains why buying the most expensive cable available is often pointless. If your car's onboard charger tops out at 7.4kW, a cable rated for 22kW will not charge it any faster. It will simply cost more and weigh more.
It also explains the reverse, which is the more common and more annoying mistake: pairing a 22kW public charger with a cable rated at 16A, and wondering why the charge is taking twice as long as expected.
Type 1 and Type 2: what actually differs
These describe the plug that goes into the car, and it is determined by the car, not by you.
Type 2 is the European standard and what almost every EV sold new in the UK now uses. It is a seven-pin connector, it supports three-phase power, and it is what you will find on essentially every public AC charge point in the country. Anything modern — Volkswagen ID range, Tesla, Polestar, MG4, Kia, Hyundai, BMW i cars — will be Type 2.
Type 1 is the older five-pin standard from Japanese and American models, and it is single-phase only. If you are looking at an early Nissan Leaf, a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, a Citroën C-Zero or a first-generation Kia Soul EV, expect Type 1.
This matters when buying used precisely because Type 1 cars are now the cheap end of the used EV market. The £4,000 Leaf that looks like a bargain is a Type 1 car, and Type 1 cables are less common than Type 2 ones, so a missing cable is more of a nuisance to replace.
The socket on the public charge point is a separate question. Most UK public AC posts are untethered Type 2 sockets, which is why the standard thing to carry is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable if your car is Type 2, or a Type 1 to Type 2 cable if your car is Type 1. The Type 2 end goes into the post; the other end goes into the car.
The granny cable is not a spare
Most EVs were supplied new with a three-pin "granny" cable as well as a proper AC one. The granny cable plugs into an ordinary domestic socket and charges at roughly 2.3kW.
That is genuinely slow. On a large battery you are looking at the better part of a day for a full charge, which is fine if the car sits on a driveway overnight and you only do short trips, and close to useless otherwise.
Sellers will sometimes present a granny cable as though the car "comes with a charging cable". It does, technically. It is not the one you will want for a public charge point, because public posts do not have three-pin sockets.
Tethered or untethered
A tethered home charger has the cable permanently attached. It is convenient — no cable to carry, nothing to store — but the cable length is fixed and it only fits one connector type, which becomes a problem if you change cars.
An untethered unit is just a socket, so you plug in whichever cable you like. Slightly less convenient day to day, considerably more flexible, and it means the same cable works at home and in public.
If you are buying a used EV and inheriting a home charger with the house, this is worth establishing early: a tethered Type 2 charger is no use at all to a Type 1 car.
Cable length is the thing people get wrong
Manufacturers typically supply around five metres, which is calculated for a charge point directly beside the charging port. Real driveways are not like that. The post is at the wrong end of the bay, the charging flap is on the other side of the car, or you are reversed in when the layout assumed nose-in.
The general advice from cable retailers is to buy longer than you think you need, and it is sound — a cable stretched taut puts strain on the connectors at both ends and becomes a trip hazard across a pavement. Ten metres is the common upgrade and covers most awkward layouts.
The trade-offs are real, though: longer cables cost more, weigh noticeably more, and are more of a nuisance to coil back into the boot. Fifteen and twenty metre cables exist and are genuinely useful in some situations, but they are heavy enough that you will resent carrying one for no reason.
What to check before you buy
Five minutes at the viewing saves a lot of irritation later.
- Ask to see the cables, physically. Not "does it come with cables" over the phone — ask the seller to open the boot and show you. Under the boot floor is the usual hiding place.
- Check which cables are there. A three-pin granny cable and a proper Type 2 lead are two different things. Establish that both are present, or that you are only getting one.
- Check the connector matches the car. Look at the charging port itself. Type 2 is the flatter seven-pin connector; Type 1 is rounder with five pins.
- Look at the rating printed on the cable. It will state the amperage. 32A single phase is the common 7.4kW spec; 16A is half that.
- Inspect the connectors and the sheath. Look for cracked housings, bent or discoloured pins, and cuts in the outer sheath. Cables live outdoors and get driven over.
- Use it as a negotiating point. If the cables are missing, that is a real replacement cost and a legitimate reason to move the price.
If the cables are missing
You have two routes. Buying a replacement from the manufacturer through a franchised dealer is usually the most expensive option. Buying from a specialist retailer is generally cheaper, and the specialists tend to stock a wider range of lengths than the manufacturer offers.
Whichever route you take, the things to get right are the connector type your car needs, the amperage that matches your car's onboard charger, and a length that suits where you actually park. Look for cables certified to the relevant safety standards, and check what warranty is offered — a cable sitting outdoors in British weather for years is worth buying properly.
One genuinely worthwhile habit: keep a spare. Cable theft from driveways is a real problem, connectors do fail, and a car you cannot charge is a car you cannot use.

None of this should put you off a used EV. It is simply a category of check that does not exist on a petrol car, and one that sellers rarely volunteer. Ask the question at the viewing rather than discovering the answer on the driveway.
